WWF Nepal, AEPC and PRC embark on 5-year partnership to promote renewable energy

Kathmandu, 19 July 2021 - In a bid to promote renewable energy in Nepal, the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC); a governmental institution under Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Prakriti Resources Centre (PRC); a non-governmental organization working for sustainable development and environmental justice in Nepal, and WWF Nepal entered into a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today at the AEPC premises.

The MoU intends to use the knowledge, resources, and networks of all three organizations efficiently and effectively, to undertake promotion of Renewable Energy (RE) technologies, formulation of RE related policies and plans that supports low carbon development, and initiate efforts to transition towards 100% RE by 2050. The MoU is non-exclusive and will remain in effect until 31 December 2025.

At the event, Mr. Raju Pandit Chhetri Executive Director of PRC underscored the importance of moving towards self-sufficiency in terms of RE and this tripartite partnership in contributing towards the ambitious mitigation targets of Nationally Determined Contribution communicated by Nepal.

Mr. Madhusudhan Adhikari, Executive Director of AEPC pointed out the significance of 100% RE for Nepal, particulary in terms of supporting low carbon development. "This MoU has provided a unique opportunity for joint mitigation efforts in addressing climate change by creating synergy between three different sectors: government institutions, civil society organizations and international non-government organizations" he added.

Dr. Ghana Shyam Gurung, Country Representative, WWF Nepal added, "This tripartite agreement has opened avenues for further collaboration in addressing climate change, scaling up efforts to transition towards a 100% RE future, as well as achieving overall conservation goals".
