From fossils to sustainable future: Towards 100% renewable and just energy transition

5th December 2023, Dubai: WWF Nepal along with Ministry of Forests and Environment Nepal and Digo Bikash Institute have organized a session, “From fossils to sustainable future: towards 100% renewable and just energy transition.” The session was centered around the exchange of knowledge and experience on Renewable Energy (RE) Efforts and the exploration of its potential for Just Energy Transition (JET).

The session included a panel discussion on the acceleration of renewable energy transition, country level efforts towards achieving 100% RE, challenges and opportunities in the community owned decentralized energy system and enhancing the North - South cooperation for JET. The panelists included Corinne Kowalski, Policy Advisor, WWF Germany, Raju Chhetri, Executive Director, Prakriti Resources Centre, Arati Poudel, Senior Research  Officer, Digo Bikash Institute, Pham Thi Cam Nhung, Climate and Energy Practice Lead, WWF Viet Nam and Yonah Turiyano, Coordinator- Energy, Climate and Extractives Programme in WWF Uganda Uganda. It was facilitated by Ms. Arati Khadgi, Head of Climate and Energy, WWF Nepal.
 
Nepal has a huge potential to generate clean and renewable energy, and transition from the fossil fuel usage towards 100% RE. But this requires clear and coherent policies and plans, their implementation, increased investments, and collaboration and partnership among different stakeholders. Nepal also needs to focus on increasing the share of non-hydro renewables in its energy-mix to make the energy system more resilient and sustainable.” said Mr. Nabin Raj Singh, Joint Secretary, MoEWRI who chaired the session.
