WWF Nepal and Nepal Buddhist Federation entered a five-year partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the WWF Nepal premise today. This partnership aims to forge strong collaboration and materialize on common conservation values to address pressing contemporary environmental issues, blending sacred philosophies, faith values, and traditional knowledge with modern conservation science for the wellbeing of people and nature.

Buddhism holds strong influence on a significant portion across the Himalayas and the world’s snow leopard habitat, while faith-based practices largely guide the lifestyle of indigenous mountain communities in the snow leopard range countries. This partnership seeks to enhance nature conservation efforts for the protection of snow leopards and other species, ensuring the wellbeing of communities that co-exist with them. This MOU is non-exclusive and will remain in effect till September 2026.

At the signing event, Dr. Ghana Shyam Gurung, Country Representative of WWF Nepal stated, “This collaboration will contribute towards putting into practice interconnected principles of the natural environment and all living beings to promote coexistence."

Acharya Norbu Sherpa, President, NBF, further added, “I believe that this partnership will play an important role in the protection and enhancement of human existence, wildlife, environment and natural resources alongside raising mass awareness through a blend of traditional Buddhism messaging and modern science”.

Through the signing of the MOU, both parties have committed to jointly design a 5-year workplan and shall jointly work towards raising funds and resources for project implementation, if mutually desired. During the contract period, the parties will work to prepare and roll out a long-term faith-plan on environment and enhance learning and sharing among Buddhist leaders and conservationists to reinforce collaboration on common values.
